I've had this tape about
30 years and the source is unknown, but someone did a fine job of recording
these shows, apparently on a quality acetate machine.
But these are AM broadcasts,
not studio tracks; and acetates, not digital recordings. So they're noisy,
ok? You'll hear some first-class talent here, including
Lionel
Hampton, Fletcher Henderson, Johnny Guarnieri,
Charlie Christian, Art Bernstein, Nick Fatool, Gene
Krupa, Dave Tough, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, more.
I spent 2 days cleaning
this up with speed correction and hundreds of manual click repairs for
the acetate damage and the lightning storms. I Hope someone likes it.

seeded at Dime by ricola. Much thanks for that! I believe I grabbed it

this is an amazing recording for it's age. I have enjoyed it so much that
I wanted to keep spreading around. It says "

taped from TV.
Four years ago I found in
Otto Flückiger’s archive a 20 minute clip of the Lionel Hampton Orchestra
playing Air Mail Special in Prague 1977 with Milt Buckner
featured on the organ. It
soon turned out that sound and picture lost their synchronicity during
the upload to youtube. At that time I did not see what I had
done wrong, so I decided
to not go through the digitizing process again and leave it the way it
is.
But now yesterday I found
out that even more footage exists from this concert. So I digitized all
43 minutes that are there (it still ends rather abrupt, so there
probably is even more footage
extant). Besides Hampton and big-mustached Milt Buckner
you get to see and hear Cat Anderson on trumpet,
Pauel
Moen and the legendary Eddie Chamblee
on saxophones, guitarist Billy Mackel and
drummer Frankie Dunlop.

Mathews was born in The
Hague. In the early 1950s he moved to the States and became one of the
first to play jazz on his buttoned instrument.
As his music didn't become
a commercial success, he had to make a living as a studio musician, until
he returned, disillusioned, to The Netherlands in the mid 1960s.

During the fourth Lionel
Hampton European tour in1958 was Hampton prohibited performing in the
Netherlands. The reason was severe disorderly conduct
of fans throughout the 1953,
1954 and 1956 concerts. The performance in 1954 resulted in damage
to the Apollo Theater in Amsterdam to the amount of
400,000.00 Dutch Guilders.
Therefore because of the ban to perform in the Netherlands in 1958 Hampton’s
concert in Germany is obvious a lot less rowdy.

My Swedish Jazz Brother/Friend Carl-Gustaf.
Hello Hans my jazz and drummerfriend
Here is a photo from the mid 60s when
I played drums in the Swedish popband The Weepers
My wonderful red Trixon drums. Inspired
by Lionel Hampton
I remember that two of my drums was broken
so I had to borrow one yellow and one white from a friend
